The Audi MedCup Circuit

29 08 2010, Caja Mediterráneo Region of Murcia Trophy - Audi MedCup Circuit

The Audi MedCup Circuit consists of five regattas over the course of five months in four different countries. They are all sailed in Southern European waters, four one in the Atlantic followed by four in the Mediterranean.

One of the most exciting new features of the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit is the introduction of the Soto 40 Class, a new one-design 40 footer which is growing rapidly worldwide.  The boats will compete with a guest on board during racing. The guest is in the middle of the action, as if they are part of the crew, a virtually unique position in sport.

Action from the water will be streamed live from the race course with more links than ever before and complemented once more this year by Virtual Eye 3 D Animations for Audi Medcup TV's daily race programme on www.medcup.org.

www.medcup.org has a host of new features this season and is again updated in six languages, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian.

At each venue the extensive Audi MedCup CircuitOpen Village offers a unique interactive, informative visitor experience. Access is free and, as well as being able to get see the race-boats close up in their ‘pit lane’ at the dock, the Audi MedCup Experience offers live coverage of the racing as well as a wide range of interactive displays and games, evening concerts and entertainment for all age groups.

The Public Race Village opens the day before the start of racing from 10:00 to 22:00

Whilst each of the five regattas stand alone as an individual event, winning the Circuit requires the best score aggregated from all of the season’s events.

With the Audi MedCup Circuit the classes of boat used are the TP52 and the Soto 40, one built to box rule and another built to a tight One Design set of rules. So the TP52’s are allowed a degree of design freedom, the Soto 40’s should be identical.

This season six new TP52 builds join the52 Series including Sweden's Niklas Zennstrom's RÀN, Udo Schutz' Container from Germany, Audi Azzurra Sailing Team from Italy, the new Quantum Racing from the USA, Audi Sailing Team powered by All4One representing a Franco German team and the new Synergy from Russia. The iconic Spanish team Bribón also competes with a new boat totem, the ex Matador.

In the newly represented Soto 40 Series, four of the five entries will make their debut on the Circuit whilst Spain's Iberdrola Team swap the old GP42 for an entry in the newly established 40 Series.  New teams include Britain's Ngoni owned by Tony Buckingham, Patagonia owned by Argentinian Norberto Alvarez, Iñaki Castañer's Noticia, and IN Yachts owned by Soto 40 European representative, Ignacio Postigo.

The Audi MedCup Circuit is acknowledged as the top regatta Circuit in the world today and attracts the very best designers, sailors and technicians.

This has inspired many owners and professional sailing teams to compete on the Circuit and to continue to participate along the seven year history of what has become Audi MedCup tour.

In 2011, the Audi MedCup visits a five proven venues. Cascais, Lisbon (Portugal), Marseille (France), Cagliari (Sardinia, Italy), Cartagena (Spain) and Barcelona (Spain)
