Emirates Team New Zealand put their shaky first days so far this season when they won Race 1 of the Camper Regatta – Conde de Godó Trophy – Barcelona. Madrid-Caser Seguros won the first of the day for GP42 Series.

Early leader Bribón (ESP) left them just enough room to allow the 2009 Audi MedCup champions to squeeze inside them at the leeward gate.

Bribón had seized the early lead when they profited from the extra pressure and shift on the left of the first beat, a gain also recognised early by the Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL) afterguard.

Racing in 11-13 knots of NEE’ly breeze with a nasty, short choppy sea, Cristabella (GBR) took the right hand gate mark and were able to pass Bribon on the second beat to take second place with Matador (ARG) holding off Marseille Trophy winners Quantum Racing (USA) for fourth.

Audi A1 powered by ALL4ONE (FRA/GER) had to miss out on Race 1 after they broke a mainsail batten.

Paolo Cian wins Race 1
Proving once again that no lead is safe in the GP42 Series, Madrid - Caser Seguros (ESP), led by skipper Paolo Cian (ITA), had their 200m lead on the final downwind leg whittled down when the series leader Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) closed up to within a meter within the final few minutes of the race. Cian, with his match racing pedigree, was able to wiggle his way out of a tactical pin by the Canarias team and gybe clear to finish just two lengths ahead to win Race 1.
